Hutchison Elementary is a large school, with a small town feel. Our little nook in the town of Herndon, Va. is a warm and caring community of learners. We are a diverse and supportive professional learning community where academic, behavioral, and social-emotional learning is delivered with kindness and patience. We are proud that over 80% of our students and families speak a second language. Building relationships with our families and local community members is vital to our success. We are proud of the extensive and meaningful professional development provided for all staff. Our coaching team provides thought partners for staff looking to grow their practice. Large School, With a Small Town Feel

Boasting nearly 1,000 students and 200 staff, we are a large but close-knit family. Much of our staff have been at Hutchison for over a decade and have taught multiple generations of students from our community. 

Supportive Professional Learning Community

We have coaches for all subjects, instructional strategy, technology, and socio-emotional learning to support our teachers. We are life-long learners who continuously hone our craft to best meet the needs of our students. 

Home-School Connection

We have a variety of events throughout the school year to connect with our community. Our principal leads Community Connections virtually every other week to provide just-in-time information and ask for community voice. On the other weeks, we have our digital newsletter, Happening at Hutchison, to provide resources and school updates. We have an event every month from Movie Nights to Family Science Nights, there are multiple ways to build our connection to our families. 

Local Level IV Program

As a Local Level 4 site, we offer a variety of advanced academic services to meet the needs of our gifted and talented students. These services include part-time and full-time programs to foster their intellectual growth.

Mentoring Program

Hutchison Elementary's mentoring program pairs students with adult volunteers and also students to students to provide academic support, social-emotional guidance, and positive role modeling. Mentors and students meet regularly to work on reading, math, or other subjects, and to build strong relationships. The program aims to enhance student achievement, boost self-esteem, and foster a positive school climate.

Principal Aiello Honored

We are thrilled to announce that our very own Principal, Ms. Aiello, has been honored as the 2023 Region 1 Outstanding Principal. Through her efforts, Principal Aiello has launched and implemented initiatives that have impacted our school community, FCPS staff, and—most importantly—our students. From enhancing academic programs to fostering a culture of collaboration and growth, he continues to set the standard for excellence.

STEAM Lab

Our eagles get to experiment, learn, and create in our STEAM lab every week. From coding robots to designing personal crests, our students have exposure to the 21st century skills required in today's world. Check out this video our students' Lego coding projects. 

Extracurricular Activities

We have many opportunities for our eagles to spread their wings! Our school is committed to environmental sustainability and participates in the Fairfax County Public Schools' Get2Green initiative. The Green Team program engages students in hands-on learning experiences to promote environmental awareness and stewardship. Our Girls on the Run club meets before school to build self-esteem and healthy habits. Our Hutch Drama Club puts on a production every Spring.

Technology Integration

Every eagle from preschool to sixth grade has a 1:1 device for their use during the school day. Students learn valuable digital citizenship skills and use technology to demonstrate their learning in multiple ways. Every classroom has a projector and many have the newest in SMART Board technology to engage students.
