WIDA Testing Beginning Soon

Only for students with an English Level Proficiency of 1 - 4 and 9 for Kindergarten.  You will receive a letter of testing notification if your child will be taking WIDA tests..  

Students will take a total of 4 tests each on a different day (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking).

Read-a-long Honoring Martin Luther King Jr

Act of Service: Community Clean-Up

Let’s Help Keep Our Wonderful Grounds Clean!

Please join us on Sunday, January 14 from 1-2:30 PM for a Community clean-up of the areas around the front of the school, playground, and surrounding areas.  All are encouraged to join us.  Dress warmly and bring rakes and other tools to help pick up trash!

Is your child missing school due to anxiety?

Here are some things that parents can do to help:  

• Do not punish your child for refusing to go to school, as this can worsen things.  
• If possible, avoid letting your child stay home. Though staying home from school may provide short-term relief for your child, continued absence from school will lead to the feeling of being disconnected from classmates and teachers, cause your child to fall behind academically, and only make it harder to return.  
• Try to understand what’s bothering them and why they are avoiding school.
• Take advantage of school resources:  
• Talk with the school nurse, counselor, social worker, and/or psychologist to discuss the student’s challenges, identify what can help your child, and develop a return-to-school plan.   
• In certain situations, a 504 plan or Individualized Education Program may be needed to ensure your child receives appropriate support and resources.

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations. 

The evening program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.   

FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse. 

Free COVID-19 Rapid Tests

Residential households are eligible to receive free at-home COVID-19 test kits. If an order has not been placed for your address since the program reopened on September 25, you may place two orders now.

Virtual Math Week–Monday 1/8/24 - Friday 1/12/24

FCPS Family Math Week starts on Monday, January 8! Participate in games and stories online. FCPS is working toward a total of 1 million minutes logged by families. The event is free, with activities from ST Math geared toward students in grades K-6 and their families. 

Math Week offers families an opportunity to experience math, literacy, history, and geography in a fun and positive way. All content will be available for families in English and Spanish beginning Monday, January 8. Visit the Math Week website.

Volunteer with Give Together

FCPS students continue to find incredible ways to serve their community while building Portrait of a Graduate skills such as becoming an ethical and global citizen. The division is excited to collaborate with Volunteer Fairfax for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Students and families can volunteer on Monday, January 15, at Give Together, Volunteer Fairfax’s family, friendly volunteer event. This event is designed to engage families with children (ages 5-12) in service learning.  

Volunteer Fairfax invites families to attend and participate in thoughtful, engaging service projects working alongside local nonprofit partners across a variety of mission areas.  Projects will include a food drive, assembling caring kits for community members who need support, making no-tie fleece blankets for veterans, environmental stewardship, and support for animal welfare. 

Teens are welcome to support this event as Teen Event Volunteers. This event is free and open to the public but registration is required.

Dual Language Immersion Program Registration

Registration for the countywide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs will open on Monday, January 22. 
Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2024-25 school year. Programs are available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. 

Parents/caregivers who are interested may want to attend an informational meeting. Meetings are held at the school site. Check the FCPS events calendar for the most current information. Meetings will begin on Tuesday, January 16. 

A virtual meeting hosted by the World Languages Office will include general program information. Access to this virtual meeting will be made available on the FCPS events calendar and the Dual Language Immersion registration site on the day of the meeting.
